Linn Hayes RIP

Linn Haynes died a few days ago in a car accident. He was 32 years old. Linn was passionate about martial arts films and a constant presence in online fan communities where he brought a wealth of knowledge to the table and was generally a calm and sane voice of reason in the boiling scrum of shouting and flame wars that message boards can all-too-often become.

Still from FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS.

Linn was working with Media Blasters on its upcoming Shaw Brothers releases, doing audio commentaries and producing extra feature material. I'll try to find out the status of the discs, but in the meantime at the bottom of this page there's links to an interview with him about these releases, and an interview with him about Chinese nationalism in martial arts films which, while not authoritative (and Linn would never claim that it was) makes for some fun reading.

And, in case you're curious, here are the titles Media Blasters have picked up from Shaw:

Five Elements Ninjas AKA Super Ninjas
Heroes Two
The Master
Challenge of the Masters
Martial Club
The Deadly Duo
The Brave Archer
The Ten Tigers of Kwangtung
Black Magic 2
Flag of Iron

Those FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS again.

Hey guys,

Look, the internet is nothing if not a place where people can vent, but let's keep this comments section clean since it is, after all, a very small RIP for someone who cared about the same movies we all did, and there ain't many people who care left. Ric, sorry you and Lynne had some personal clashes and he probably did have an unfair view of you and what you did, but do you really think this is the best place to air them? Trying to score one last point off a dead guy is hardly classy and I know you're a bigger and better man than how you come across here.

And Trigger, your sentiment is understood, but name calling never really accomplishes anything.

Both of you have a right to say what you want, but I have a right to keep this post about Lynne from degenerating into a flame war, so let's all agree to drop this here.

Thanks for understanding.

Trigger: Real classy comment Ric
Maybe when I die, you can come speak at my funeral about yourself and what a D-bag I think you are.

Maybe you should've just said that you respected him and felt a bond through your shared interest and that his voice will be missed and that your heart goes out to his family and loved ones for their tragic loss... or perhaps you should've said nothing.

Except, of course, when it came to me. I guess I was his kryptonite.

I understand that he thought my work was lacking. What I don't understand is why he then chose to repeatedly attack me personally, spreading lies about my character and accomplishments -- and never even tried to find out the truth, which could have been easily corroborated with the many others I supposedly "wronged."

I was hoping to meet him some day and let him vent on me personally, maybe even setting the record straight, but sadly that is now not to be.

Despite the seemingly mean-spirited reaction I elicited in him, I respected his knowledge, enthusiasm, and usually calm voice.

Best,

the lying, ass-kissing, incompetent, hired-people-to-write-my-own-books,

Ric Meyers
