More Asian movies coming to America.
Japan's multi-director project TEN NIGHTS OF DREAM is getting a DVD release in the US from Cinema Epoch. It includes segments by Takashi Shimizu, Kon Ichikawa, Yudai Yamaguchi and more.
(Trailer here) (DVD info here) (Details here)
Masato Harada (BOUNCE KO GALS) is getting a US release of his kind of snoozy horror movie, SUICIDE SONG, from Media Blasters' Tokyo Shock label.
KITARO NO GEGEGE, the really awful kiddie film about the ghoulish comic character, Kitaro, is getting an August 26 DVD release from Navarre.
The amazing LATE BLOOMER is getting a very small theatrical release in late July before coming out on DVD later this summer.
(Showtimes in NYC - scroll down) (Also, if you want to show the film in your area, you can contact the distributor directly)
The greatest Rajnikanth movie ever made, SIVAJI: THE BOSS, is available on English-subtitled DVD.
It seems that MAD DETECTIVE will only be running for a couple of days theatrically in NYC, and at midnight shows to boot, so your best bet to see it is IFC video on demand.
CHOCOLATE, the movie about the autistic ass-kicking chick from Thailand, has an English-subtitled DVD out from Hong Kong now.
(More info, plus some gossip that matches what I've been hearing)
Finally, Kino has picked up Aditya Assarat's Thai film, WONDERFUL TOWN, and is giving it a one-week run at the Anthology Film Archives starting July 18. It played earlier this year as part of "New Directors/New Films" in NYC.

Is the The Weinsteins? If not, who? Bey Logan was present for the Bangkok world premiere of the film and it's been reported that the Weinsteins had a hand in post-production, reshoots and script changes, but then later Twitch was saying Sahamongkol's deal with the Weinsteins had collapsed.
Chocolate isn't coming to America yet. Who knows for sure when?
"also worth noting, although i'm not saying they're to grady's taste, that america - although incredibly slow right now, and deafeningly so over the last six months - sees DVDs of shion sono's 'noriko's dinner table' (sequel to 'suicide cirlce', of sorts, out this month), hideo gosha's 'the yakuza' (aka 'wolves of the yakuza', out september), 'black house' (the 1999 original before the recent korean remake), and kon ichikawa's 'revenge of a kabuki actor' (august). i'm all over 'ten nights of dreams', as soon as it hits, of course.
for those who've long been multiregion, or blu-ray, there's a series of HK blu-ray discs of johnnie to films just begun - exiled, PTU and mad detective in the next couple of weeks - and they seem to be coming in multi-zoned discs too according to the first listings of 'exiled'; i'm hoping that this months release of pou soi-cheang's 'shamo' will get an expected / predicted blu-ray during august, a month after it's initial DVD release will have taken place, considering that his last ('dog bite dog') was stunning.
in japan, this month sees yoji yamada's latest, starring tadanobu asano, 'kabei' get it's initial subtitled disc (remember it's R2, not R1) as all his films in recent years have... i'd expect a cheaper HK disc and an america release for certain. also in japan, august sees what looks like a promising comedy, 'our 700 day war against the police', followed in september by the critically-acclaimed (and festival hit?) 'gachi boi' - both are rare(ish) examples of R2 Japanese DVDs with English Subtitles. Always lots more around than initially appears to be the case.
Don't let the recent HK disc of one of 2007's under-the-radar hits 'Funuke : Show Some Love You Losers' slip by, if, as with all these much lower down in my comment, you can play discs from other countries.
