Bollywood sci fi?!?

This slipped under the radar and it wasn't until it appeared on io9 (gack!) that I noticed it. A trailer...for a Bollywood movie...set in the future...with robots!

For those of us who care about the future of humanity and the advancement of the arts, the moment when robots would be incorporated into a musical was one much awaited and anticipated. You can have all the freaky digitally created actors you want, you can keep your Andy Serkis and your Gollums and your FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN. But in a world where actors can provoke life-threatening outrage by what they do, doesn't it make sense that robots will soon be doing the dangerous work of starring in movies? When an Indian actress can be publicly censured for kissing onscreen, a Kissing Robot is the only solution. When a Chinese actress can be blacklisted for playing a naked, scrumping spy, then a Naked Scrumping Spy Robot is the only way to go.

LOVE STORY 2050 may not wind up being a very good movie. Starring the largely ungifted Priyanka Chopra and the director's son, Harman Baweja, it was delayed from its December 2007 release until June 2008 due to the huge amount of post-production work necessary and Kareena Kapoor famously jumped ship after the first few days of shooting (apparently director Harry Baweja consulted a handwriting, astrology and tarot all-in-one psychic expert to "numerologically correct" his company's name, the film's title, and he and his son's names). Peter Jackson's WETA and three other special effects houses are working on the digitry, and it's said to be the most expensive Bollywood production of all time, although pretty much every new Bollywood movie makes that claim so whatevs.

There are plenty of reasons it might be a failure, but based on the trailer, I dunno...this could be a mind-blowing camp-festival along the lines of KRRSH or KOI MIL GAYA. Or it could actually be good? And give credit where credit is due: at least this version of the future is clean and shiny and has flying cars, and isn't another boring variation of dystopian BLADE RUNNER-esque set design. Plus: robots! In a musical!!

Thanks for linking to us... I'm obsessed with Bollywood scifi and I've been looking forward to this movie since I first heard about it last fall. I was checking every day to see if the trailer was up yet. Whether it's actually a good movie or just a silly campfest, it'll definitely be memorable!

By the way, I've received several emails complaining that Priyanka Chopra is not "largely ungifted" as I described her, but is, in fact, extraordinarily gifted. I'm sure she is, but in everything I've seen her in she does little more than act charming and look attractive. However, having not made my way through her entire filmography there is definitely the chance that I missed her masterpiece.
