HONG KONG – Hong Kong is set to host the Asian Film Awards a major new awards show in March.

Event is organized by the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) in conjunction with Entertainment Expo. Inaugural event will kick off on Tues Mar 20 to coincide with the first complete day of the Filmart trade show and opening night of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (Mar 20- Apr 6).

Some 33 films will compete in ten categories, ranging from best film to screenwriting, cinematography and best visual effects. The AFA Monday announced up to six nominees in each category, having screened over 700 eligible pics.

Unlike other shows in the region which select according to nationality or ethnicity, the Asian Film Asian are intended to be a pan-Asian in tone and span the full range of genres.

As such it should leave the long-established Hong Kong Film Awards, which have often coincided with the HKIFF, unaffected. The HK Film Awards are this year scheduled to take place Sunday April 15.

“With more than 4 billion people in Asia – 60% of the global population – a celebration of the Asian cinema is long overdue” Wilfred Wong, Chairman, Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, said. “We aim to make the AFA the most prominent and definitive film awards for the region by highlighting excellence in Asian filmmaking and by bringing broader attention to the rich and diverse stories and storytellers from all over Asia today.”
