VENICE Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami is the winner of the 65th Venice Film Festivals Glory to the Filmmaker Award, which honors eclectic masters of world cinema.

The prize, created last year in honor of Japanese director Takeshi Kitano, is named after Kitanos eponymous pic.

Kitano handed the award to Kiarostami in a ceremony in the Lidos Sala Grande. Kiarostami is in Venice with his experimental Juliette Binoche-starrer Shirin, which screens out-of-competition.

The fest runs through Sept. 6.
