TOKYO -- The Fuji TV network has set the cast of the theatrical feature and TV drama based on cell phone novel, "The Red Thread."
Cast includes Nao Minamisawa, Junpei Mizobata, Anna Ishibashi and Sayuri Iwata.
Fuji producer Yoshihiko Taneda said Tuesday that the project team is closely co-ordinating the Shosuke Murakami-helmed pic, which will be released by Shochiku on Dec. 20. The drama begins its TV run the same month.
The story focuses on the emotional and spiritual growth of the teenage heroine, while depicting everything from her adolescent love troubles to her father's battle with cancer and her close friend's struggle with drugs.
Written by an anonymous scribe under the pseudonym Mei, "The Red Thread" (Akai Ito) rose to No. 1 in the rankings of a popular cell phone novel site in August 2006 and held the top spot for 18 weeks, with a total of 36 million hits to date.
Published in paperback in 2007, "The Red Thread" has sold 1.8 million copies.
Written mostly by amateurs and posted to specialized sites, cell phone novels have become a hot genre for publishers, who are finding readymade bestsellers among the more popular ones, as well as pic and TV producers.
The most successful cell-phone-novel-based pic to date is "Sky of Love," which earned $25.5 million following its November bow.
