HONG KONG – NOW TV, the IPTV-based pay-TV company, has pulled further ahead of cableTV rival I-Cable.
NOW's performance was unveiled as part of parent company PCCW's interim results Thursday and showed the paybox with 927,000 subscribers, an increase of 13% over June 2007. That compares with 892,000 for I-Cable, a 1% increase, revealed earlier this month.
NOW still trails in terms of paid-for users. It said that paying customers increased by 19% to 668,000.
Company is at the core of the HKT media and telecoms operations that PCCW is trying to spin off, which would leave PCCW as a property company. Successful bids for the HKT business are expected to be announced in October or Nov.
The TV and content business saw half year revenues rise 45% to HK$1.04 billion $133 million) as it enjoyed higher subscriber numbers, higher revenues per user and improved advertising earnings. EBITDA losses narrowed to $5.1 million.
User revenues were lifted by introduction of a larger and more expensive sports channel option and by high definition channels. Company says it will introduce more HD and personal video recorder services in the second half of the year.
