TOKYO -- Distrib Toho has set a new company BO record for July with a total take of Yen 12.2 billion ($111.1 million).
This figure beats July of 2001, the previous record holder, when the mega-hit Hayao Miyazaki toon "Sprited Away" was in the theaters. It is also 113% higher than B.O. of July last year.
Toho pics on release in July included the new Miyazaki toon "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," which bowed on July 19 and whose cume reached $65.9 million as of August 10, as well as the new entry in the hit "Pokemon" toon series, which is expected to better the $45.9 million total of last year's installment. Also, the smash romantic drama "Boys Over Flowers" added substantially to the July BO, as did the hit Koki Mitani laffer "The Magic Hour."
Toho's total for January to July inclusive is $334 million, which is up 27% on last year's B.O. for the first seven months.
