TOKYO -- Culture Convenience Club, which operates the Tsutaya DVD rental chain, will combine its three Internet consumer biz subsids into one unit.

CCC will merge Tsutaya Discas (rental DVD delivery and Web streaming service) and Tsutaya BB (broadband webcasts to home TVs) into Tsutaya Online (online sales) from Oct. 1.

The object of the merger is to smooth Tsutaya's transition from a brick-and-mortar to online operation, while strengthening its Web-based biz .

Founded in 1983, Tsutaya is Japan's largest DVD rental chain with 1,347 stores as of July. It also has 922 record stores, 483 game stores, 381 recycled goods and 523 book stores.
