TOKYO -- Shochiku has added the biopic “Genghis Khan -
To the Ends of the Earth and Sea.” to the slate it is bringing to Berlin, the
company has announced.
Produced by Haruki Kadokawa as a follow-up to his 2006 smash WWII epic
“Yamato,” the pic tells the story of the fabled Mongolian warlord’s rise to
power, starring TV drama vet Takashi Sorimachi (“Yamato”) as Khan.
Filmed entirely in Mongolia, at a a cost of Y3 billion ($25 million), with
Mongolian soldiers playing Khan’s hordes, the pic is being touted as one of the
big Japanese releases of 2007.
Co producing with Kadokawa is Ryuhei Chiba of Avex
Entertainment, who also made the hit “Tokyo Friends” pic and DVD series, while
the helmer is Shinichiro Sawai, who also worked with Kadokawa on “W’s Tragedy”
(1984) and other pics.
Shochiku will release “Genghis Khan” in Japan on March 3.
