TOKYO -- "Red Cliff" will open the 21st edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival, which unspools from October 18 to 26 in Tokyo, organizers announced on Wednesday.

The John Woo-helmed period epic stars Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Wei, Hu Jun, Chiling Lin and Shido Nakamura.

Nakamura, a star of Clint Eastwood's "Letters From Iwo Jima" and a member of a famous Kabuki acting family, is the biggest local name in the cast.

The pic opens in Japan on November 1, with Toho-Towa and Avex Entertainment distribbing.

The first edition under new chairman Tatsumi 'Tom' Yoda, TIFF is using "ecology" as its theme, with a green carpet instead of the traditional red and a new section of pics on the theme of humanity's relationship with nature. The main fest venues -- theaters in the Roppongi Hills and Bunkamura shopping and entertainment complexes, will remain the same as last year, however.

TIFF is the key event of the Japan International Contents Festival (CoFesta), an umbrella org coordinating 16 events, running from September 30 to October 4, that present Japanese contents, including pics, music, games and TV shows, to the world.
