Hiroshima fest unveils rich line-up

TOKYO -- The Hiroshima Animation Festival has announced its program for its 12th edition, which unspools from August 7 to 11. Among the highlights are "Glago's Guest," which Chris Williams helmed for Disney, and "Presto," made by Doug Sweetland for Pixar. Both shorts are getting their Japan preems. Disney's "Cinderella" and Pixar's "Finding Nemo" will also screen.

The fest's competition section feature 76 toons gunning for the Grand Prix and Hiroshima Prize, both worth one million yen ($9,434), as well as other awards decided by a six-person jury.

This year the fest is screening a retro of works by Dutch toon master Paul Driessen, who has also been named the fest's Honorary President.

Also on the sked is a program of Finnish toons, a selection of student shorts and retros devoted to Olimp Varasteanu, George Sibianu, Alexander Tatarsky, Donyo Donev and Japanese comic artist and animator Osamu Tezuka.

Finally, the fest will hold an Education Film Market where students can meet recruiters from toon houses and schools for aspiring animators.
