BEIJING -- Chinese media have been told the official period of mourning following the Sichuan earthquake is over and TV stations may now resume showing game shows and other light entertainment skeins deemed too frivolous to screen during a period of national sorrow.
The ruling from the State Administration of Film, Radio and Television (SARFT) comes with one month to go until the Beijing Olympics, and the mourning period ended on July 7, the China Film Group website reported.
SARFT told the head of Shanghai Media Group and many other TV stations about the lifting of the mourning period for the 90,000-plus victims of the quake. SMG said it was planning to resume shows about dancing and family entertainment, while CCTV2 would resume its Lucky 52 game show.
TV officials have been told to prepare a positive environment for the Beijing Olympics, which start on August 8.
