TOKYO -- Shochiku launched the Shochiku Channel on YouTube on Wednesday, the second such channel by a major Japanese distrib on the popular video site, after pioneer Kadokawa Pictures.
Among the content on offer is a promotional clip for "Gegege Kintaro 2," a sequel to the hit 2007 kiddie pic about the adventures of a boy goblin and his spooky pals. It opens wide in Japan on July 12.
In addition to upcoming features, Shochiku plans to upload clips from DVDs and made-for-the-Internet video content. Shochiku-produced toons will also be part of the channel's line-up.
Major Japanese media companies, including distribs, have so far been reluctant to offer their content on YouTube. The recent moves by Kadokawa and Shochiku, an old-line company that started producing pics in 1920, may help break the logjam.
