HONG KONG He's an anti-hero to some, but Sony's "Hancock" put on a superhero performance at the Hong Kong weekend box office.
The Will Smith-starrer leaped into the number one spot with a three day cume of $1.304 million, and a good margin ahead of "Kung Fu Panda" which kept its second rank, and "Wanted" which slipped from first to third.
"Panda" put in a pounding performance, up 1%, though figures are not directly comparable as it opened last week with only a two day weekend, starting Saturday. Still its $841,000 total pushed its nine day cume through Sunday to $2.50 million. Universal's "Wanted" shed 43% and earned $548,000 for a cume to the same date of $2.24 million.
The three played at the same number of venues, 35 apiece, and delivered per venue averages of $37,300 for "Hancock," $24,000 for "Panda" and $15,700 for "Wanted." The top trio accounted for a massive 93% of the $2.91 million weekend turnstile take.
The weekend's only other significant opener, "Nim's Island," handled by indie Golden Scene, placed fourth with $78,000 from 19 venues.
France's "Ensemble C'est Tout" expanded its playdates from four to seven and climbed one place from eighth to seventh. The only Chinese-language pic in the chart, Johnnie To-helmed "The Sparrow" dropped 85% for a $20,500 take and a three week cume of $702,000.
