Yakusho makes directing debut Print E-mail

TOKYO -- Koji Yakusho, star of "Shall We Dance?," "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Silk," is helming his first pic, "Gama no abura" (Frog's Oil), based on his original story.

He will star with Satomi Kobayashi as the parents of a youth (Eita) who has been severely injured in a traffic accident.

The pic began filming on May 18 and is skedded to wrap at the end of the month.

Producer Phantom Film is aiming "Gama no abura" at Cannes, where two films starringYakusho -- the 1997 Shohei Imamura drama "Unagi" and this year's Kiyoshi Kurosawa drama "Tokyo Sonata" -- took prizes.

Phantom plans to release the pic in Japan in the first half of 2009.
