CANNES – Bill Kong's Edko Films is flexing its muscles as producer and first-time sales agent.

Company is backing "Dance Subaru," a comic-book adaptation about a ballerina who stays true to her dreams despite the odds. Helmed by Lee Chi-Ngai, it stars Meisa Kuroki, Sano Miku, Korea’s latest music sensation Ara and veteran Japanese actress Momoi Kaori.

Pic is a co-production through Hong Kong's Perfect Beauty International, with Warner Bros. Pictures Japan and Avex Entertainment Inc. of Japan, Korea’s S.M. Entertainment and Singapore’s MediaCorp Raintree Pictures.

Pic is now in post and will be released in early 2009 by Warner Japan, SM, Edko, and Raintree. Fortissimo is handling sales outside Asia and Avex has global soundtrack rights.

Kong's Edko is one of the most powerful and consistent movie groups in Asia. Its production credits include "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "The House of Flying Daggers," while on the distribution front it handles Sony and Universal titles in Hong Kong.

Company is also pushing forward as a sales outfit. At Cannes it will be presenting "Claustrophobia" a tale of suppressed office romance which marks the directorial debut of award-winning screenwriter Ivy Ho. It stars Karena Lam and Ekin Cheng.

Pic had coin from film fund Irresistible Films and the Hong Kong government's new Film Development Fund.

Edko's Grace Leung is repping worldwide rights.
