HONG KONG – First it was China, now it is India's turn to overtake the U.S.

          According to data from the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India, country had 261 million mobile phone subscriptions at the end of March, making it the world's second largest cellular market in numerical terms after China.

          TRAI said that pace of growth increased, with more than 10 million new subscribers added in March, compared with some seven to eight million in previous months. Wireless connections now outnumber the 39 million fixed line phones in India by seven to one.

          Broadband Internet connections grew by 430,000 or 12% in March to hit 3.9 million at the end of the quarter.
