HONG KONG Sony Pictures Television Int'l has signed a
day-and-date video-on-demand deal with Korea Telecom.
Agreement
means that KT can screen current and future Sony movies on its Mega TV Internet
Protocol Television platform at the same time as the local home video release.
Deal is
similar to one it struck last year in Singapore following the launch of IPTV
services in that country.
IPTV is set
to grow rapidly in Korea following the passing of enabling legislation last
year. KT launched Mega TV nationwide in July 2007, making it available to its
6.52 million high-speed Internet users. By April 16, Mega TV had 590,000
subscribers. Company expects to increase total to 1.5 million by the end of
2008.
Disney has a VoD deal with KT and
with its rival Hanaro Telecom's HanaTV though that does not include a
day-and-date element. Sony also has a VoD via mobile deal with SK Telecom.
Titles
covered by the news deal include "Vantage Point," "The Water
Horse," "Across the Universe," "CJ7," "Hancock"
and "21." TV series "Damages" and "Cashmere Mafia"
are also included.
