BEJING – China's online population stood at 221 million by the end of February, officially ranking the world's most populous nation as the country with the greatest number of webizens, ahead of the United States, Chinese government data shows.
Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information showed that the figure had risen from 210 million by the end of last year, which was five million shy of the US figure.
According to some figures, American also has 221 million users.
China's online community is an enthusiastic one, despite the government's Great Firewall of China which blocks access to sites deemed subversive or pornographic.
However, despite the high absolute figures, China is still less wired than the global average – the proportion of internet users in the total population was 16% at the end of 2007, compared with the global average of 19%.
