CNN is continuing to come under fire from the Chinese government for remarks made by commentator Jack Cafferty, who called the Chinese "goons and thugs."
On Tuesday, CNN apologized for Cafferty's April 9 remarks, saying he was offering a "strongly held" opinion of the Chinese government, not the people.
But China's Foreign Ministry protested to the CNN's Beijing bureau on Wednesday. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said on Thursday that the apology didn't go far enough.
The state-run Xinhua news agency reports Jiang as saying, "Cafferty used the microphone in his hands to slander China and the Chinese people (and) seriously violated professional ethics of journalism and human conscience."
The spat comes just 12 weeks before the Olympic Games open in Beijing on Aug. 8, which thousands of foreign journalists are expected to cover.
