HONG KONG – The Singapore Int’l Film Fest wrapped Monday
with a screening of “Road To Dawn,” an account of Sun Yat Sen's revolutionary
efforts when he was in Malaysia.
On
Sunday night fest handed out its Silver Screen Awards. Kudos was dominated by
"Slingshot," a squatter drama by Brillante Mendoza of the
Philippines. Pic won top prize in the Asian Feature Film category, best
director and the NETPAC Award.
Other prizes went to actress
Inessa Kislova for Abai Kulbai's coming-of-age pic “Swift” and to Abdellatif
Abdelhamid's Syrian comedy “Out of Coverage,” which collected a special
jury award. Boo Junfeng, a local film student won three awards for "Keluar
Baris" in the Singapore Short Film section.
Fest, in
its 21st edition, struggled with budget problems and was operated on
$370,000 (S$500,000). However, it managed to preem a new section Singapore
Panorama, which screened 14 Singapore-made documentaries and features shot
around the world.
