LOS ANGELES -- Continuing its acquisition spree and making its first purchase in Asia, Disney Interactive Studios has acquired Chinese videogame developer GameStar.
Six-year-old company, which has 90 employees in Shanghai and Wuhan, has done outsourcing work for several vidgame companies, including Disney Interactive.
Disney's videogame unit initially plans to use GameStar to support projects at its five other developers, as it has done in the past on a contractual basis. As it grows, however, GameStar may start to develop its own titles, most likely ones aimed at the fast-growing Chinese market.
Disney has been on an acquisition spree in the past few years as it has invested heavily in the videogame space. GameStar is the sixth developer it has purchased or founded since 2005.
Though it has primarily focused on games licensed from its sibling film and TV units, Disney Interactive has recently started to publish non-Disney branded games and original properties.
Financial terms of the GameStar acquisition, which is expected to close in late summer, were not disclosed.
