"Hairspray," the big Broadway musical about the big girl with a big heart and even bigger hair is coming to China's biggest city Shanghai in July, the latest big-name musical to land in Shanghai.
There will be 20 performances of the musical, starring Brooklynn Pulver, at the Shanghai theater, said Fang Shizhong, president of the theater, told the Xinhua news agency.
Shanghai will be the first Asian city to host the musical, Fang said. The theater has successfully tapped the growing interest in musicals in China and imported about a dozen musicals since then, including "The Lion King."
"The import of Hairspray has enabled Shanghai to pulse with the international market in terms of operation of musicals," said Fang, "Shanghai has become an emerging city for the industry of musicals in Asia, following in the footsteps of Broadway in New York and London's West End."
