HONG KONG – Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom is to offer BBC high definition content as a subscription video-on-demand service to its broadband customers from this month.
"The BBC HD SVoD launch in Taiwan will be the first time the BBC HD brand is available outside the UK and in advance of the 24hour linear channel launching later this year," Christine Leo-McKerrow, senior VP and GM, Global Channels Asia-Pacific, said.
BBC HD SVoD viewers will be able to choose from 10 three-hour multiple genre blocks of programs at any one time. The blocks will feature drama, comedy, documentary, natural history, music and arts programming. BBC HD will be broadcast in English with Traditional Chinese subtitles and will offer for the first time, program promos and navigational menus in Traditional Chinese.
Content on the HD channel will include Judi Dench-starring drama "Cranford," set in Victorian England, natural history series "Ganges," new comedy series "Sensitive Skin" starring Joanna Lumley, "Aida," Verdi's opera about the great pharaohs, and geo-history series "Earth: The Power of the Planet."
There are five other nets in BBC Worldwide's Global Channels portfolio: BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies and BBC World.
