TOKYO -- The Fuji TV network will make a third installment in its smash-hit "Bayside Shakedown" cop thriller series, Fuji chief producer Chihiro Kameyama revealed on Monday.
Kameyama made the announcement at the opening ceremony for a new police station in the Tokyo Bay area where the series is set. "I'd like the first scene of the new film be the move from the old (Tokyo Bay) station to the new one," Kameyama said.
Fuji has yet to decide the start of production or the release date, but the helmer of the first two "Bayside" pics, Katsuyuki Motohiro, will also make the third. Also, series scripter Ryoichi Kimizuka will pen part three. Yuji Oda, who played the rebellious salaryman-turned-detective hero in the previous pics, is in discussions to reprise the role for part three.
Based on a cult hit Fuji TV show, the first "Bayside" pic earned $101 million in 1998, while the 2003 follow-up grossed $173.5 million -- an all-time BO record for a Japanese live-action pic. Two theatrical spin-offs, based on supporting characters in the first two pics, have also cleaned up at the box office.
