T-Joy halts "Yasukuni" screenings |

TOKYO -- A
Tokyo
exhibitor
has
pulled
out
of
an
agreement
to
show
controversial
docu
"Yasukuni,"
citing
security
concerns.
The
pic,
shot
by
Chinese
helmer Li
Ying
over
the
course
of
a
decade,
details
activities
in
and
around
the
title
shrine,
which
is
dedicated
to
Japan's
war
dead,
including
clashes
between nationalists
and
anti-war
activists.
The
pic,
distribbed
by
Argo
Pictures,
was
skedded
to
open
on
April
12
at
four
theaters
in
Tokyo
and
one
in
Osaka.
Toei
subsid
T-Joy,
which
operates one
of
the
theaters,
the
new
Wald
9
'plex
in
the
Tokyo
entertainment
district
of
Shinjuku,
said
that
it
reached
the
decision
not
to
show
the
pic
last Thursday
and
formally
conveyed
the
news
to
Argo
last
Saturday.
A
T-Joy
spokesman
told
the
press
that
the
pic
"has
a
lot
of
controversy
surrounding
it.
If
an
incident
occurs
it
will
cause
trouble
and
hardship
to
the
other
tenants
in
the
building."
Other
theaters
have
not
yet
indicated
that
they
will
follow
T-Joy's
lead.
The
pic
has
already
screened
at
the
Berlin,
Sundance
and
Pusan
fests.
