"Girl" wins best film at Deauville Print E-mail

HONG KONG -- South Korean film "With a Girl of Black Soil" was Sunday named as the best film at the tenth running of the Deauville Asian Film Festival (March 12-16) in France.

Pic, which preemed in Venice, is helmed by Jeon Soo-il. Prize was awarded by jury headed by Gallic helmer Patrice Chereau. Pic also collected the Lotus Air France prize awarded by a separate critics panel.

The main jury also awarded a shared second prize to Thai helmer Aditya Assarat's "Wonderful Town" and Liew Seng Tat's Malaysian "Flower in the Pocket." Both pics have amassed a hatful of festival prizes on much traveled careers.

Hit war movie "Assembly" by Chinese helmer Feng Xiaogang picked up the Lotus Action Asia/13th Street prize for an action film. Action jury was headed by helmer Jan Kounen.
