HONG KONG – Local media execs, celebrities and Hong Kong's Chief Executive Donald Tsang, Tuesday rushed to mourn the death of Lydia Shum, one of the territory's best loved entertainers.
Her plump physique, bad hair and retro glasses gave her a friendly, everyday look that went over well with generations of TV and film auds. Known as 'Fei Fei' or fatty, Shum was born in Shanghai but became a child star in Hong Kong and as a comedienne was a long-term fixture on Hong Kong free-to-air channel TVB. She also appeared in over 70 Hong Kong movies.
"Fei Fei is Hong Kong's 'happy fruit'. Hong Kong people have grown up with her laughter and she had brought a lot of happiness to us," Tsang said.
She had been suffering from liver cancer for over a year and died in Queen Mary Hospital, aged 60. Shum is survived by 21 year-old daughter Joyce Cheng and former husband Adam Cheng.
