“Chicago” is the latest Rialto tuner turning Japanese, with the longrunning Broadway revival set to preem a Japanese-language production in Tokyo this fall.
New staging is co-produced by Tokyo Broadcasting System, Inc. and Kyodo Tokyo Inc., who join original Rialto producers Barry and Fran Weissler. (Tokyo Broadcasting also is a partner in Key Brand Entertainment, formerly the legit arm of Live Nation.)
English-language version of “Chicago” already has played Japan four times. The Japanese “Chicago” follows in the footstep of Rialto offerings such as “The Lion King” and “Beauty and the Beast,” which also have been translated into the language.
Japanese version of “Chicago” bows in October at Akasaka ACT Theater in Tokyo, with a subsequent engagement at Umeda Art Theater in Osaka.
