BEIJING -- "Atonement" will be among the first foreign pics to screen in China
after a lengthy blackout on foreign movies when it opens on Feb. 22.
China
Film Group spokesman Weng Li confirmed that censors had passed the
British pic. The blackout was introduced in December against a
background of trade tensions between Washington and Beijing.
Chinese
authorities denied the existence of a ban on Hollywood pics and
tactically allowed the year-old Will Smith pic "The Pursuit of
Happyness" to open.
The blackout also boosted Chinese product during the lucrative Christmas and Chinese New Year period.
"Atonement"
is believed to have been cut to suit Chinese auds. The country doesn't
have a classification system, and movies have to be suitable for all
age groups.
