TOKYO -- Helmer Katsuhide Motoki is making a followup to "Gegege no
Kitaro," a kiddy fantasy based on an iconic comic, with popster Eiji
Wentz reprising the lead role, according to producer Shochiku.
Pic grossed Y2.3 billion ($21.3 million) last year.
The
new movie will follow the adventures of yokai, spooky creatures based
on Japanese mythology and put into comic form by Shigeru Mizuki in 1959.
"The
first film emphasized the point that yokai are strange and interesting
creatures, to raise awareness of them as characters," said pic producer
Yoshio Ishizuka. "The second will show the relationship between humans
and yokai in a more realistic way."
Shochiku has skedded the pic
for a summer release and is already planning a part three and four. The
first "Gegege" pic was released in 25 territories, mainly in Asia.
