BEIJING -- Chop-socky is the biggest earner in China these days and salaries among
martial arts stars at the top-end of the biz are looking decidedly
competitive.
Kung-fu thesp Jet Li was the country's top-earning entertainer
in 2007, according to a Chinese newspaper list, followed by fellow action star Jackie Chan.
Li, 44, made RMB465 million ($64 million) last
year, according to the third annual list of star incomes by the Shanghai
newspaper, the Oriental Morning Post.
The list is based on incomes reported over the year and Li starred in
three pics last year: "The Warlords," "The Forbidden Kingdom" and "The
Mummy 3." His salary for "The Warlords" alone was reportedly $13.8
million, which is a big rise from the few cents he earned for his first
movie, "The Shaolin Temple," 27 years ago.
Jackie Chan was estimated to have earned around $59
million.
Among songsters, Hong Kong pop star Jackie Cheung held pole position
after a mammoth world tour which included 75 concerts.
The biggest-earning
woman was Malaysia-born thesp Michelle Yeoh, who came in at seventh with a pay
packet of some $11 million, followed by Zhang Ziyi who earned $9 million.
Thesp Tony Leung, who featured in "Lust,
Caution," reeled in $40 million, while Andy Lau was in fifth
place with $32 million. Chow Yun-fat was in sixth place with $13.8 million.
The only female warblers on the list were
the Taiwanese girl group S.H.E., who made $8.6 million from
concerts and commercials.
