TOKYO -- Sony will ship 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles by Dec. 31, prexy Ryoji Chubachi told the press Thursday.
Despite
bottlenecks in producing the console's blue laser component, Chubachi
insisted the target was achievable. Sony is also on track to ship 6
million PS3s by March, as well as meet its European launch date next
year.
The PS3 sold out in Japan and the U.S., following its
November launch but lack of availability meant that Sony lost sales
momentum to Nintendo's Wii console, which moved 476,000 units in the
U.S. in November, compared with PS3's 197,000.
Meanwhile,
Nintendo still plans to ship 4 million Wii consoles by the end of the
year, twice the number of PS3s promised by Chubachi.
Microsoft,
whose Xbox has been on the market for nearly a year, is on track to
ship 10 million Xbox 360 consoles by the end of December.
