TOKYO -- Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan will mark 2007 as its best B.O. year ever, according to new company figures.

SPEJ expects to end the year with a total B.O. of Y15.5 billion ($143.5 million), compared with the $135 million earned in 2006, the previous peak year.

Although SPEJ did not have a film this year to equal the "The Da Vinci Code," which scored $84 million in Japan in 2006, it did release several strong or stronger-than-expected titles, including "Spider-Man 3," with finished with $73 million, and "Resident Evil 3," which will soon surpass the series record of $24 million in Japan.

An SPEJ spokesman stressed that the $143.5 million total is an estimate. "Our president, Dick Sano, mentioned it at out 2008 line-up announcement, but we will not release the official numbers until after the end of the year," he said.

Among the pics on the SPEJ 2008 line-up are "Reign Over Me," "The Water Horse" and "Vantage Point."
