SHANGHAI -- A former China Central Television anchorwoman has been awarded 100,000 yuan ($12,500) in a defamation case against a newspaper from the western city of Chongqing, in another example of China's increasingly litigious media playing field.

The Chongqing Commercial News ran a story claiming Wen Qing refused to compensate the victim of a road accident, in which her car was involved.

A district court in Beijing ordered the newspaper to print an apology and pay the sum for Wen's mental anguish.

The number of defamation cases in China has risen dramatically over the past couple of years, many involving Internet sites.

Legal experts claim that the government uses defamation laws to control media outlets that criticize the Communist Party.
