What do the
world's top film festival directors speak about when they sit down for a drink
or dinner? Movies? Sure. Programming? Possibly. But rugby?
The wonders of the oval ball game, the ongoing Rugby World Cup and
sporting injuries was at the heart of an hour long on-off conversation between
Cannes topper Thierry Fremaux and Sundance's Geoff Gilmore on Friday night. They
were ably assisted by "Osama" producer Julia Fraser, an aficionado of both the
game and the physique of the new generation of professional players.
But who knew that both selectors could cleverly tackle each other with
references to that specialist genre, the rugby movie? Fremaux had one from the
1960s, while Gilmore has already screened "Forever Strong," an American rugby
drama (!) helmed by Ryan Little.
Expect to find the two huddled around a TV screen somewhere in Busan as
Australia likely put an end
to the reign of Cup holders
England.
