China's digital output hits new high

SHANGHAI -- China will have produced more than 100 digital films by the end of the year, up from 52 last year, according to the film authorities.

Zhang Hongsen, deputy director of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, announced that digital output would account for around 33% of China's films for this year, up from 20% in 2005.

One of the year's biggest hits, "Crazy Stone," was shot digitally for around 3 million yuan ($370,000); it made over $2.75 million in domestic B.O. over the summer.

Digital shoots may be increasingly, popular but digital distribution is still underperforming. The country's rush to a digital cinema future has slowed over the past year or so; there are fewer than 200 digital screens, and compliance with international standards is still a major issue.
