SEOUL - The Pusan International Film Festival will open with the world premiere of Feng Xiaogang's epic Chinese war movie "Assembly".

Widely anticipated film from the director of "The Banquet" and "A World Without Thieves" centers around a captain during the Chinese civil war who struggles to restore honor to the 46 men in his company who sacrificed their lives.

Pic was co-produced by China's Huayi Brothers and Korea's MK Pictures, with the latter providing special effects expertise gained during the production of Korean War movie "Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War".

Meanwhile, Japanese anime "Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone" has been selected as the festival's closing film.

Pic is based on the cult TV series "Neon Genesis Evangelion", which also spawned a 1997 feature film of the same name. New feature by animators Hideaki Anno, Kazuya Tsurumaki and Masayuki provides a new ending and interpretation to the story, and will be the first segment in a trilogy.

The screening of "Evangelion" will be the international premiere, following the Japanese release on September 1.

The 12th PIFF runs from October 4-12.
