BEIJING – First-time helmer Alexi Tan’s “Blood Brothers” has
had a
strong opening in mainland China, taking in 22 million yuan ($2.9
million) between its opening on Aug. 16 and last Sunday (Aug.26).
The Taiwanese actioner clocked up 12 million yuan ($1.6 million) in its
opening weekend, said Huayi Brothers, which owns the Chinese rights to
the pic.
Pic took in 4 million yuan ($530,000) on Aug. 19, which is Chinese
Valentine’s day.
Upbeat mainland B.O. comes after news of a disappointing start in Hong
Kong, where distrib Golden Scene said the pic took in HK$604,880
(US$77,541) its opening weekend.
Pic stars Liu Ye (“Curse of the Golden Flower”), Daniel Wu (“The
Banquet”) and Tony Yang (“Ming Ming”). It’s a cautionary tale
about three youngsters from the countryside who land in Shanghai in the
1930s.
Blood Brothers was produced by Terence Chang's Lion Rock Prods. and
John
Woo and inspired by Woo's "Bullet in the Head."
