The costumer "Silk," directed by Francois Girard
("The Red Violin") and starring Michael Pitt, Sei Ashina and Keira
Knightley, will have its world preem as a 'Special Presentation' at the
upcoming Toronto
festival.
Pic is an adaptation
of Alessandro Baricco's novel about a 19th-century silkworm merchant from
France, who travels to Japan
and starts a forbidden romance with a mysterious woman.
"Silk"
was set up as a $22 million Italian-Japanese-Canadian co-production headed by Domenico
Procacci's Fandango and Niv Fichman's Rhombus Media. It was also produced by
Sonoko Sakai, formerly a full-time acquisitions consultant in the U.S. for Gaga
and Nippon Herald.
Sakai
was responsible for bringing on board Japanese distributor Asmik Ace as financier
and additional coin from a rare Japanese public-private cultural fund, Cine
Invest. Other Japanese coin followed from Gaga boss Tom Yoda's private company TY
Limited.
