Disney Channel expands in Vietnam |

HONG KONG –
Walt Disney Television (Southeast
Asia) has struck a deal with Vietnam Cable Television Service
Technique Center (VCTV) and Saigon Tourist Cable Television Company (SCTV).
Agreements give carriage for the Disney Channel in 75% of Vietnamese pay-TV
households.
VCTV, which provides cable TV in Hanoi and DTH nationwide and is an affiliate of
Vietnam Television (VTV), the country’s terrestrial TV broadcaster. SCTV is a
joint venture between travel chain Saigon Tourist Holding Company and VTV
covering Ho Chi Minh
City.
Disney rates Vietnam as one of its biggest
potential markets anywhere in the world and now has its media networks, studio
and Disney Consumer Products operational. Disney Channel first began
broadcasting in Vietnam in May 2005. and now sees 70%
of its content run with Vietnamese subtitling. Theatrical releases go through
MegaStar, a joint venture between Envoy Media Partners and Phuong Nam
Corporation.
"The increasing interest for TV content coupled with a high level of TV
penetration – an estimated 80% across the country – positions
Vietnam as a TV market with
vast potential," Laura E. Wendt, vice president and managing director of Walt
Disney Television International (Southeast
Asia) said.
