CANNES -- Ben Sombogaart, helmer of Oscar nominee "Twin Sisters," is to direct "Nadra," a colonial drama set in Singapore.

Story is told through the eyes of a 13-year-old girl who was at the center of a custody battle that led to street riots in Singapore before becoming an East-West conflict and a Christian-Muslim standoff.

The $6.5 million pic is set up as a co-production between Singapore's Monsoon Pictures and Netherlands-based IdtV Film. Development finance has been supplied by the Singapore Film Commission.

Local rights have been bought for Benelux region by A Film Distribution and for Singapore by Golden Village Pictures.

" 'Nadra' isn't merely a story about the bitter custody battle between two families, it is a story about a clash of cultures and ideologies, how ordinary people oftentimes become unwitting pawns in events much larger than themselves," said Monsoon Pictures' m.d. Christopher Chew.
