Rom-com and police drama messily collide in less-than-perfect "The Perfect Couple." Korean tube star Lee Dong-wook and local cupcake Hyeon Yeong are the titular mismatched duo in director Kim Jung-woo's follow-up to his 2006 romantic comedy "Oh! My God." Despite a promising and original start, pic's narrative is too wayward even on its own terms to succeed. Effort garnered respectable B.O. on January release but prospects further afield look dim.
Thanks to his martial-arts and firearms expertise, handsome Kang Jae-hyeok (Lee) is a successful Seoul police detective. Choi Su-jin (Hyeon) is an entertainment journalist with a burning desire to work in crime news. In a (literally) painful meet-cute, Choi, snacking at a fishcake stall, accidentally stabs Kang with a skewer, interrupting his pursuit of a drug dealer. When Kang becomes the police's media rep, as Choi is transferred to crime reporting, the reality show that ensues ("The Choi vs. Kang Report") enables the bickering pair to pursue a crime boss for the benefit of both their careers. Action sequences convince but there's a lack of chemistry between the stilted Lee and livelier Hyeon. Tech package is top-notch.
