South Korean monster pic "The Host" carted home four Asian Film Awards,
including film and actor for Song Kang-ho, at the inaugural event held
Tuesday night as part of Hong Kong's Entertainment Expo.
Kudofest,
attended by stars and directors from across Asia, the AFAs are a
groundbreaking effort to recognize achievement in 10 categories among
the 700 films produced in Asia last year.
Other prizes for "The Host" included cinematography for Kim Hyung-goo, and visual effects for San Francisco-based the Orphanage.
The
awards were otherwise spread fairly evenly throughout Asia, with Jia
Zhangke from China winning director for "Still Life"; Nakatani Miki
from Japan winning actress for "Memories of Matsuko"; Iranian film "Men
at Work" taking screenplay.
Prizes were selected by a jury of 17 programmers, critics and industryites from Asia and beyond.
The ceremony hit a few minor bumps but surprised observers by wrapping up 10 minutes earlier than planned.
The
night's most touching moment came with the presentation of a special
award to actress and producer Josephine Siao Fong Fong, who was also
celebrating her 60th birthday.
Biggest drama of the evening
centered around whether fans of Korean actor Jung Ji-hoon (aka "Rain")
might riot if their man didn't receive the actor award -- or clash with
a smaller, but equally vocal, crowd supporting Hong Kong actor Andy Lau.
