It could have been so wonderful. Wilson Yip's DRAGON TIGER GATE (now out on DVD) is based on Tony Wong's Hong Kong comic book that ran for around 30 years. And what a wonderful movie it could have been if Yip had taken his visual cues from the earlier issues of the comic rather than the later issues.

I too discovered Jademan comics when they were released in English back in the early nineties, and I loved them. The plots and dialog didn't seem to make much sense at all, but man were the kung fu and visuals cool to look at. Yep, that's definitely the version Wilson Yip was drawing inspiration from, alright! You can always pretend Chang Cheh's Chinatown Kid is an adaptation of the early-era Dragon Tiger Gate--you've got the seventies clothes, the garish color scheme, and only slightly less blood:
